Experimental Evaluation of a New Bridge Retrofit Device: Shape Memory Alloy Restrainers

چکیده
Past earthquakes have illustrated the vulnerability of bridges to collapse as a result of large relative displacements at the hinges. In this study, Nitinol Shape Memory Alloy restrainer cables are evaluated for their potential to limit the relative hinge displacement in bridges. Shape Memory Alloys are unique metallic alloys that have the ability to sustain large elastic deformations. Experimental studies of a two span bridge with in-span hinges with SMA restrainers show that they are much more effective in limiting the hinge displacement.and and deck accelerations compared with traditional steel restrainer cables. Subsequent tests of a 4 span concrete bridge shows that the SMA restrainers are particularly effective in limiting hinge displacements when the cables are pre-strained.

Large scale testing of nitinol shape memory alloy devices for retrofitting of bridges
A large scale testing program was conducted to determine the effects of shape memory alloy (SMA) restrainer cables on the seismic performance of in-span hinges of a representative multiple-frame concrete box girder bridge subjected to earthquake excitations. Another objective of the study was to compare the performance of SMA restrainers to that of traditional steel restrainers as restraining d...

In the last two decades, there has been an increasing interest in structural engineering control methods. Shape memory alloys and seismic isolation systems are examples of passive control systems that use of any one alone, effectively improve the seismic performance of the structure. Characteristics such as large strain range without any residual deformation, high damping capacity, excellent re...

Constitutive law for shape-memory alloys subjected to multi-axial loading, which is based on a semi-micromechanical integrated multi-plane model capable of internal mechanism observations, is generally not available in the literature. The presented numerical results show significant variations in the mechanical response along the multi loading axes. These are attributed to changes in the marten...
متن کاملA Superelastic Retrofitting Method for Mitigating the Effects of Seismic Excitations on Irregular Bridges
Irregularities in bridge pier stiffness concentrate the ductility demand on short piers; while not operating on the longer and more flexible ones. The existence of non-uniform, ductility demand distribution in bridges significantly influences seismic response. As such, this paper proposes a new approach for balancing the ductility demand in irregular bridges by utilizing shape memory alloys (SM...

Magnetic shape memory properties of Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals were characterized by measurement of stress-induced martensite reorientation under constant magnetic fields. Also magnetic field-induced strain as a function of the applied magnetic field under different constant compressive stress levels has been investigated. All the experiments were performed at room temperature in which the sample...
